For the past 15 or so years I have been studying the theory and practice of gender identity formation in infants and toddlers. Because my friends know this, it is not unusual for someone at a social gathering to approach me with a story about a grandchild, or a friend’s grandchild who expressed themselves as gender-non-conforming from a very young age. My interlocutor is likely to cap the story with either an assertion or a question: It’s Biological, Right?. In this talk I will explain why the question makes little sense, why we probably should give up altogether on the idea of gender identity, and what lines of inquiry could lead us to a more informative and epistemically just formulation of investigations into gender variability.
